“Lights, Please?” By: Melodie Rose Jordan.

“the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.” Matthew‬ ‭4:16‬ ‭

I think we all have some pretty dark times in each of our lives. I can remember a dark time in my life. I felt so alone. I had so many questions: “why am I here? Am I lost? Will I ever find a light again?” It was exactly four years ago. I just got my heart broken and I was struggling to find peace. I was kind of angry at God, like was He even around? I put myself in the position of plugging myself into the world, hoping to find the fulfillment I needed. Once I did that, the darkness was becoming more of a friend than anything. I seeked out all the wrong things. I was turning into a person that I knew I shouldn’t be. I cried and cried out to God saying, “Why are you not here? Why do you not care?” The fact was He did. He was next to me the entire time. He was attracted to the darkness that was me. It’s been four years since I felt that darkness, and its weird that it’s creeping back.. but my perspective has changed. I am plugging myself in the world, but to be a light instead. If you read in Matthew chapter 4, Jesus was taken into the forest to be tempted and to fast. The devil was there the whole time to make sure the darkness consumed him. Jesus however, overshadowed the darkness with light. Let’s stop there for a second. Jesus took the form of man. How easy it could have been to give into human attributes like anxiety, stress, and temptation. He didn’t though because He knew that His strength came from above. He came down to this earth not the judge us but to carry us through this hard life. (John 3:17).

You see, here’s something to think about, being a Christian is that we’re called to be “a light and salt to the earth” (Matthew 5:13-16) but how are we to do that? What good is it to be only a light in an already lit room? We’re called to go to the scariest, darkest places and bring light. It’s terrifying. I know. I’m not saying go to a creepy alley way and say “IM A LIGHT FOR JESUS!” You can be a light at school, at work, or even in your own home. Maybe you have a close friend who has chosen a dark path. That’s your time to be a loving light. To show them that they are worth lighting a path for them. This verse is a perfect way to give you a more Jesus like perspective:

“Jesus replied, “My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.” After saying these things, Jesus went away and was hidden from them.” John‬ ‭12:35-36‬ ‭

Our paths are dark. They’re not lit without the light from Jesus. It’s okay to be friends with darkness. They are so much more than labels, sinners. They’re all human who need so much love. Let’s show them that! So when someone you know is having a hard time seeing where they’re going, remind them that their light is so much closer than they think.
