“A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.”Proverbs 15:1
Can I just say what is on my heart? There is too much hate going on! I have seen constantly people just tearing each other down, gossip, resentment, anger, rage. So many of these awful attributes are taking over the world. When are we Christians going to step out and show kindness, gentleness, LOVE?! I want to be the friend that everyone can rely on. Sure, I am not perfect and I will mess up. That doesn’t mean I stay that way. I want the world to see me as a kind, loving person who seeks out to encourage people like Christ. So, my question for you is: Are you a friend or foe? Let’s break down these two characteristics and examine our hearts together:
“A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.” Proverbs 16:28 (spreading gossip and lies)
“Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.” Proverbs 17:9 (claiming to forgive a friend but still holding resentment can tear friendships apart)
“Those who lead good people along an evil path will fall into their own trap, but the honest will inherit good things.” Proverbs 28:10 (while it is important that spend time and show love to everyone, we need to set boundaries. We should never associate ourselves too long with people who are against good. Because evil is the opposite of good which is against God. We become the people who we are with.
Heart stinging a bit? Mine is. I sometimes get a little too much into myself and forget my place. I love being with God and using His word to fuel me, but sometimes I get reckless and hurt those even more than they hurt me. While it may be justified that those who done me wrong deserve my wrath, Jesus took the wrath for me by dying on the cross and covering my shame. Why fight fire with fire and cause rage, when Jesus showed me compassion and forgiveness?
“They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble.” Proverbs 3:23 (a good friend stays by your side no matter how far off you get. As long as you know what you’re doing is wrong and are wanting to make it right, a good friend is there to make sure you have the prayer and encouragement you need to get back up again.)
“So don’t go to war without wise guidance; victory depends on having many advisers.” Proverbs 24:6 (God has called all of us to be with one another for the battle of Life. What good is it to go out to fight alone? It is better with two! One that will stay by you and help you fight evil with love and the word of God!
“For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.” Romans 5:10 (through the blood of Jesus Christ we are called friends of the king of heaven. What a beautiful thing to know that we are called His.)
So, what are you? A friend or foe? And what kind of people are in your life? Are there any that are weighing you down, veering you off your path to Jesus? Or are you surrounding yourself with those who want to see you succeed and love you despite your past? We all need to understand that by judging each other, causing quarrel, and spreading gossip is causing self destruction and overseeing the whole purpose of God: LOVE! We were all once sheep gone astray, let’s keep fighting and seeking out those who need love and real friendship! Let’s create allies not enemies!
